PDST TiE ICT Spring 2017 Courses

The following ICT courses will be taking place in Dublin West Education Centre this Spring. Please download, complete and return the ICT Application form to info@dwec.ie if you would like to book a place. All ICT courses are funded by PDST TiE and require a minimum of 10 participants to run. To qualify for a place you must have a teaching council number.

Digital Citizenship / Internet Safety (PRIMARY)

ICT is rapidly becoming an integral part of teaching learning and assessment, however as students become citizens of the digital community, they must be guided and facilitated in how to behave responsibly online and develop good judgement when interacting in a global digital society.

This course will focus on supporting teachers in teaching students the rights and responsibilities that are prevalent for them as digital citizens. It will concentrate on the following themes:

  • Digital Citizenship online and in the classroom. (What does it mean to be a good citizen and a citizen in the digital world?)
  • Being ethical online (Citing sources, Copyright etc)
  • Identifying safe sources of information for students
  • Managing myself online (Digital footprint, online identity & social networking)
  • Staying safe online (Cyberbullying, Sexting, Inappropriate content)

An Introduction to Scratch Programming in the Classroom (PDST/Lero)

Beginners/Basic Course

 Scratch is a free application, developed by the MIT Media Lab, which allows users to create and share their own interactive stories, animations and games.

It is easier to use than traditional programming languages as it consists of graphical blocks which snap together.

This course, over 2 dates enables teachers to use Scratch to support teaching and learning, both at primary and post primary level.

The course was designed by PDST Technology in Education in collaboration with Lero.

Exploring the use of Tablets in the Primary Classroom

(Intermediate)

(Participants must have their own / school iPad): Explore the use of iPads to enhance teaching, learning and assessment in the Primary classroom. Create teaching and learning resources. Use iPads to support literacy and numeracy development in the classroom. Explore applications (apps) to enhance teaching, learning and assessment in literacy and numeracy.

Module 1: Generating content for Literacy and Numeracy
This module covers how to create your own teaching resources for literacy and numeracy. It includes maths trails and ways to use tablets/apps for open-ended investigation (problem solving).

Module 2: Assessment and Digital Portfolios

This module investigates methods of using tablets to support assessment and evaluation strategies at primary level. It also covers apps that can be used by teachers and students to maintain a digital portfolio of their work.
